Y Alcoholism has always been a serious social issue in the nations of East Central Europe.

Y Birth Defects

Y Cholera is any of several diseases of humans and domestic animals usually marked by severe gastrointestinal symptoms; especially acute diarrheal disease caused by an enterotoxin produced by a bacillus (Vibrio cholerae syn. V. comma) when it is present in large numbers in the proximal part of the human small intestine

Cholera is frequently spread by contact with infected human waste materials. In East Europe the decline of public systems of water filtration and sanitation has served as a source for the cholera bacterium. Outbreaks of cholera have occured with increased frequency in East and Central Europe since 1989.

Y Tuberculosis is a highly variable communicable disease of humans and some other vertebrates caused by the tubercle bacillus and characterized by toxic symptoms or allergic manifestations which in humans primarily affect the lungs. Tuberculosis is highly treatable through a course of antibiotics. However, if left untreated, the disease is able to develop into highly contagious and toxic forms unaffected by existing medication.
