Program Description
This Field School in Cultural Anthropology is designed to teach students and
in-service teachers how to observe, understand, and respect another way of life and to be
able to teach this knowledge in their own classroom setting. The field school reproduces
the first month of an anthropologist's field work-- when they are learning how to navigate
the host culture. The first month of research is often the richest month, while the
researcher is fresh, their senses are functioning more intensely and their observations
are more accurate.
The field school is designed to provide a guided experience that allows students to
process the difficulties of becoming bicultural, and transform culture shock
into culture knowledge. The course requirements are designed to transform
participants' cross cultural experiences directly into teaching materials that they can
use in their own classrooms.
Course Offerings
Students must enroll for a minimum of 3 credits, selected from Anthropology 451: Field
School in Cultural Anthropology; International Studies 490 or 590: Field Studies Abroad:
Costa Rica. Independent Studies in other courses or topics may be arranged.
Course Requirements
Participants will be required to attend orientation sessions on the CCSU campus during June and July. The dates and times of the orientation sessions will be scheduled to accommodate the needs of the participants.
